Obituary of Virgil E. Fowles Jr.

Virgil E. Fowles Jr.

July 31, 1936 - October 2, 2024

Virgil E. Fowles Jr., a beloved resident of Brooks, Maine, passed away at home on October 2, 2024. Born on July 31, 1936, he was the cherished son of Verna (Spear) Fowles and Virgil Fowles Sr., and brother of Bruce and Brooks Fowles.

Virgil was a well-known figure in the community, having run Fowles’ store and served as a dedicated postal worker. He also served in the Coast Guard and various local service organizations. He was on the City Council, President of the Jaycee Organization, and was always involved in the Broiler Festival and holiday parades. Virgil was very civic-minded and volunteered in numerous community activities.

Virgil loved music, especially Barbra Streisand, and enjoyed dancing, antique hunting, swimming, traveling with the YMCA, and spending time with friends. He was the life of the party and kept people laughing. Always willing to lend a helping hand to a friend in need, Virgil was a cherished member of the YMCA family, attending nearly every day and helping put on dinners for special events. He was a member of the “End Of The Hall Gang” at the YMCA, there for once-a-month senior meals and excursions.

His passions included antiques and the art of dickering at antique shows, gardening, and the joy of acquiring a new vehicle every two years. He found great pleasure in floating on his pool noodle at the Waldo County YMCA, and in trips and talks with his many friends “Over at the Y,” and enjoyed many meals at his favorite spot, Dockside.

Virgil is survived by his partner Fisher Goodrich of Bar Harbor, his son Sean and wife Hillary of Saco, grandson Dillon Fowles of Lyman, step-grandson Griffin Brumer of Foxborough, MA, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and friends in the community.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Waldo County YMCA in Virgil’s name. They also ask that you honor Virgil by doing something joyful and remembering him fondly, and that the “End of the Hall Gang” put on a special meal in his honor.

Virgil’s legacy of kindness, joy, and community spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.  Memories and condolences may be shared on his tribute wall.
