Obituary of Ashley Herbert Brown

Please share a memory of Ashley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Ashley Herbert Brown, 95, passed away on January 14, 2024. He was born in Belfast to Everett and Eva (Hall) Brown. Along with his parents, he shared his early years with his siblings Elaine (George) Potter, Maurice (Janet) Brown, and Jean Condon.

Ashley had special connections with many because of his truly caring ways. He made his home in Swanville Maine alongside much of his immediate family. He was a woodsman for most of his life, working with his father Everett, brother Maurice, son-in-law John, long-lasting and nephew Dean. The last of his working years were at Mathews Brothers where he was always proud of his work. Through his time at Mathews Brothers, he made many long lasting friendships. After retirement, he enjoyed being with his family and friends. He was a great cribbage player and enjoyed many hands with his family and friends. His garden was once known as the best in Swanville. He tended his crops meticulously, rotating their locations year over year and always putting the peas next to the cucumbers. He loved giving youngsters rides in the wagon behind his lawn mower and taught many to drive it. Throughout his life he was always a provider, offering experience and expertise. He was well-liked by those around him. He genuinely cared about others and their lives, always showing great interest in them. Like his great-grandson, Jon Said, “When you see him again after a time it’s like the last conversation never ended, it was amazing how he still remembered at 95”. Ashley mostly grew up in Belfast but spent much time in Brooks at his Uncle Lawrence Brown’s Farm where he helped with various tasks around the farm.

He is survived by the love of his life, Florence Brown. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary last September. Daughters Linda Tripp, Carol (David) Curtis and Mary Brown. Grandchildren, Darrell (Marie) Curtis, April(Randy) Dodge, Wendy (Milton) Higgins, Ginger (Mark) Sheldon, Patrick (Amber) Brown, Kristine Wentworth. Many loving great and great-great-grandchildren as well.
