Obituary of Andrew Walter Hurd Sr.

Andrew Hurd, Sr. went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 23, 2023 at Waldo County General Hospital surrounded by his loving wife and his three sons and their families. He was born to Vaughn and Geneva Hurd of Knox on January 12, 1942.

Andy began his life doing a man’s work on the Sweet Rest Stock Farm, his family’s dairy farm.  He met his soulmate, Judith Littlefield, and married her on May 1, 1965.  They welcomed their first son Andrew Hurd, Jr. in 1966.  In 1969 he and Judy delivered their second son Peter Hurd.  And in 1974 they completed their family with their third son James Hurd.  While raising these precious boys, Andy did many jobs for people hauling logs and gravel, bulldozing and earthwork, moving buildings, and anything else that was needed.  He also worked for 20 years hauling windows for Matthews Brothers, where he was known as Panda Bear (a nickname derived from his sister Maxine calling him Panda) by his good friend Peter Haddock and by the many friends he met on the CB radio.  After “retiring” from that job, he continued to be self-employed doing earthwork, hauling wood and gravel, field mowing, running equipment, and more.  And he helped many people get their Class A licenses including most recently and lastly his grandson Joshua.

Andy was known for his deep faith in Jesus Christ and boldly witnessed to many family members and friends often starting with the question, “Do you know where you’re going?”  He passed this faith on to his boys through family devotions, church attendance, conversations, and spending lots of time with them.  He deeply loved all things truck and tractor and hardly missed a tractor pull during his lifetime, enjoying his boys and many conversations with his numerous friends.  He was also known for his hard work and integrity.  Whatever he did for a job, it was treated like a precious piece of art, done right and worked out carefully and efficiently.  While he was trucking, he always said, “I’d rather be two hours early, than two minutes late and make someone else wait.”    He was diligent and took pride in his work, a trait passed on to his boys.  He was also known for his deep love for people—many called him for help on a regular basis, and he jumped into action with every call.  He was also known for his witty sense of humor and loved to tease (often with a toothpick in his mouth and a twinkle in his eye)—laughter was an important part of his life.   And he deeply loved his wife Judy with whom he shared 58 precious years, making many wonderful memories.  They enjoyed building their family together, traveling to Florida and spending time with family and friends there, many camping trips, bike riding, home-cooked meals, and so much more.  He will be greatly missed by the many who knew him.

He was predeceased by his parents Vaughn and Geneva Hurd, his sister Anne Mitchell, and his brother Howard Hurd, Sr.  He is survived by his devoted wife Judy Hurd, his sister Maxine Hathaway and husband Clifton, his son Andrew Hurd, Jr., his son Peter and wife Heidi, his son James and wife Angela, his grandchildren Mason Hurd, Griffin Hurd, Joshua Hurd, Mariah Whitcomb and husband Lyndon, Sydney Hurd, Vaughn Hurd, and Sheridan Hurd, his great grandchildren, Addison Whitcomb and Ella Whitcomb, special family friend Robert Ponzo, and many nieces and nephews. 

A funeral service will be held at Veracity Chapel in Morrill on December 30, 2023 at 10:00am and will be available online at Veracity Chapel Facebook and Veracity Chapel’s YouTube channel.
