Obituary of Roger E. Smith
Roger E. Smith, 78, of Searsport, Maine, peacefully passed away on September 21, 2023, at the Sussman House in Rockport, surrounded by his loving children, and cherished grandchildren.
Born in Belfast, Maine, on October 10, 1944, Roger was the son of Helen Young Smith and Carlton Smith. Roger's family moved to Searsport during his youth, where he met his neighbor Beverley Ward. Roger and Beverley married on November 7, 1965, embarking on a loving journey together.
Throughout his life, Roger held various jobs until 1985 when he joined the Town of Searsport. For over two decades, he dedicated himself to the Public Works Department, retiring in 2011. But Roger's work didn't stop there. He had a deep passion for helping others and could often be found outside of work, lending a hand with car repairs, splitting wood, or carpentry projects. He truly was a Jack of all trades, leaving a lasting impact on his community.
Roger is survived by his adoring daughter Lyn and her husband Toby, his son Wes and his girlfriend Jessica, his beloved grandchildren Emily, Kelci, and Peyton and his great-grandchildren Elizabeth, Alex, and Maverick. Roger's brothers, Owen of Belfast, David and his wife Leona of Connecticut, and Dennis and his wife Karin of Florida, his in-laws Cora Dean Ward, Dennis and Mieko Ward of Okinawa, and Russell and Kathy Ward of Minnesota remember him fondly. In addition, he is survived by two special aunts Barbara Howard and Jean Howard along with several nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart. He is also survived by many close friends.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents Helen Young Smith and Carlton Smith, stepmother Kay Smith, his cherished wife Beverley, his grandson Jake Dyer, his Uncle Wesley Smith, sister-in-law Brenda Smith, brother Stretch Smith, mother and father-in-law Elliott and Irene Ward, brother-in-law Elliott Ward and his friend and neighbor Stevie Morin.
Roger held ten individuals especially close to his heart throughout his life: Butch, Paul, Mark, Neil, Scott, Holly, Meagan, Bristol, Emerson, and Teagan. These cherished friends and family members shared countless memories and experiences with Roger, and their bond was a source of great joy and support.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Debbie Patten at WCGH, the dedicated staff at the Sussman House, and the staff and patrons of All Play Bowling Center for their unwavering support and care during Roger's journey.
A celebration of Roger's life will take place on Friday, September 29th, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Community Building on Prospect Street in Searsport. It will be an opportunity to come together, share stories, and remember a man who touched the lives of so many.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Sussman House Volunteer Fund in Roger’s memory at 40 Anchor Drive Rockport, Maine, 04856. Contributions to the Sussman House Volunteer Fund will honor Roger's peaceful passage and support the compassionate care provided by volunteers to those in need.
