Obituary of Mary E. Staples

Mary E. Libby Staples

The family of Mary Staples announce her peaceful passing on August 19, 2023 at the age of 91. The family and community experienced a profound loss this week of the one fondly referred to as “Mother Mary.” Her compassionate nature and instinct to care for others earned her this affectionate nickname.

Mary was born February 23, 1932 to Cedric and Norma Holloway of Lincolnville, ME. She attended the one-room school house in Lincolnville Center and later graduated from Camden High School. Mary grew up working on her family farm in Lincolnville. While raising her own family she wore many hats such as School Bus Driver, Social Worker, Inn Keeper and operated her own Independent Cleaning Service. Her passions included gardening, canning, cooking, reading, bird watching, and making her famous donuts. All four-legged friends had a place in her heart.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Herbert L Libby; daughter, Norma Leigh Stinson; and brother, John Holloway.

Mary is survived by her husband, Stephen A. Staples of Milo, ME; sister, Patricia Wheaton of Belfast, ME; sister-in-law, Jane Holloway of Bar Harbor, ME; son, Parker & Margaret Libby of Oregon; son, Eric & Mary Libby of Michigan; son, Daryl Libby & Joni Dyer of Lincolnville, ME; daughter, Stacy Foss of Lincolnville, ME & Bill Foss of Belfast, ME; son, Corey & Kelley Staples of Hermon, ME; daughter, Kim & Charles Wilmire of Delaware; son, Chris & Marianne Staples of Searsmont, ME; daughter, Joselyn Staples of Appleton, ME; son, Andrew & Lyonelle Staples of Appleton, ME; son-in-law, Ed Stinson of Lincolnville, ME; dear-friend, Patricia Fogg of Rockport, ME; Additionally 23 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and friends.

As we bid farewell to our Mum, we take comfort in knowing she will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of those who loved her. Mary’s love, witty sense of humor, and dedication to family and friends will forever guide and inspire us. Please help us celebrate Mary in the place she grew up 2070 Belfast Road on September 23, 2023, between 1:00 PM-6:00 pm. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please bring a photo or memory to share.
