Robert Hamilton Jr.

Obituary of Robert Eastman Hamilton Jr.

Robert (Bob) Eastman Hamilton Jr., 87, of Brooks passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, July 11, 2023. Bob was born in Portland, Maine on April 26, 1936 to Robert and Francis (Salisbury) Hamilton. In 1962 he married Claire Nitzel, and they started their life together traveling with the Army. He retired from the army after serving for twenty six years, to include a tour in Vietnam. Bob was a member of the American Legion Benjamin Berry Post #50 for 20 years where he served as Chaplain.

Bob was very proud of all of his children Susan, Robert, Holly, Gregg, and Melissa. Everywhere he went, he told, even strangers, about all their accomplishments.

A talented woodworker, he built decks, sheds, several pieces of furniture still in use today and created signs and accent pieces for the town of Brooks. He loved to fish, read and recite poetry, listen to classic country music, and share stories from his time in the military. Always the jokester, his quick wit provided many one liners and lots of laughs. His work ethic was beyond reproach and, while working as a bus driver for the county of Waldo, he earned the nickname “Sketty-O” while transporting children that attended Belfast Area Children’s Center and was always quick to lend a hand to elderly passengers in need. He may have even been the favorite bus driver of one particular office manager. He was an excellent neighbor many times coming to the rescue of neighbors who came to refer to him as “Dr. Bob” and Robere’.

A wonderful grandfather, one grandchild once commented, “call papa, he can fix anything!”. He was so thrilled to have his grandson accompany him on his Honor Flight Maine trip to Washington DC. Always so much fun, children loved his jokes and teasing.

There were so many people who meant so much to Bob but nothing compared to the love he had for his wife Claire. They were married for 60 years and held so much love for one another. Together they created a beautiful family, traveled the world and participated in things few are fortunate enough to experience. While living in Hawaii they engaged in square dancing and toured the islands. They even lived in Japan for almost two years where they visited Tokyo. They had a beautiful marriage full of love.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, his son Robert III, and his siblings Jean, Jeanette, Pat, and Phil

Left to honor Bob and remember his love are his wife, of 60 years, Claire, his children Susan, Holly (Randal), Gregg, and Melissa (James) as well as his sisters Bonnie and Jackie, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta on July 28, 2023 at 9am.

The family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to Northern Light Hospice staff, especially Karen, Nichole, Ron and hospice volunteer, Don, the Meals on Wheels program, and the Varney Fellowship.

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Honor Flight Maine.  Checks can be sent, made payable to HONOR FLIGHT MAINE, Mailed to: Honor Flight Maine, PO Box 699, Brunswick, ME 04011-0699.

Memories and condolences may be shared on his tribute wall.
