I know there is a running joke about awful mother-in-law‘s, but I never experienced that myself. From the time I met Inez when I was 16 years old, she treated me with kindness. When I lost my own Dear Mother, Inez made me feel special and I sure did need her. I love her dearly, and I wish I had told her how much she really meant to me. Somehow, I think she knew though.
My mom used to tell me that we reminded her of the Biblical Naomi and Ruth and their relationship. I feel so blessed that she was part of my life. I will always miss her and cherish my memories of her.
I know everyone knew how proud she was of all of her grandchildren! She sat through many basketball games starting with Bum League, all the way up through High School games and was always ready to go with us!
She had a great sense of humor, and I would like to share a couple of memories on that note. We had come to Thorndike for a weekend visit. Inez, Gayle, Julie, Jill, and I decided to go to Hill Top for some lunch things. On the way Megan decided to fix Grammy’s hair. She had lots of colorful barrettes and elastics, and she thought she had styled it just right. When we got there, I told Inez that she could take them out. She said, “No, I’ll wear them, and if anyone says anything, I’ll tell them that my five-year-old granddaughter did my hair.” As a grandmother, I would love to say that I would’ve proudly worn that hairdo in to the store, but I honestly can’t say that I would have! Lol! Then there was the time when she had to have a tutorial from four year old Terry on how to make scrambled eggs. You see, she had made them for him with brown on them. He told her they shouldn’t have brown, just yellow. She then allowed him to make his own, standing on a chair beside her.
I had a thought that has comforted me. I imagined my mother standing at the pearly gates with her beautiful smile, and her arms opened wide, ready to greet her friend Inez, in heaven.
My heart is broken, but I know that someday I will see you again, Dear Lady. Until then, I will miss your hugs and warm smile. Love, Wendy
