As I sit here planning my 40th class reunion from BAHS (class of '84), I fondly remember Mr. Johnson. For 3 years he taught me French and then Spanish. Mr. J, as we called him, was exceptional. He made learning other languages fun, interesting, & interactive. You will always be remembered by your students.

Bob was a good friend and a worthy opponent in labor negotions with the MSAD 34. Others raged but we kept our coolbecause of a level of trust that we shared.Betty. I know that you did your best to support him during his long illness with the resolute strength characteristic of your leadership with the Waldo County Democratics. My life is better for having known you both. JEM

My favorite teacher, I’ve asked about him many times since leaving Belfast. I lived in Spanish speaking countries because of Mr. Johnson. He was so kind and had the most calming presence.
I graduated from BAHS in ‘97 and he definitely is a teacher I never forgot. Thank you Mr. Johnson for giving me change so many times when I wanted a woopie pie and had no money, thank you for always telling me I wasn’t living up to my potiental-and making me want to do better, and thank you for always having the kindest smile and the best laugh-we all loved you!
I’m sorry to hear that he has passed before I got to thank him in person for being so cool! Sending prayers to him and your family ♥️

Wrote this 9 months before my fathers official diagnosis
My Father Refuses to Pull The Thistle
My dad refuses to pull out the thistle plant making its way through the ground in front of the porch. And I’m glad he hasn’t. He lets them grow wild in the backyard and over the years we’d watch as they’d reach the window. A time or two we’d both just stare out the window above the sink and stare at the activity of bees and hummingbirds that would make their way to the plant. And then the gold finches, would come, and there is nothing quite like it watching them perch on the thorny plant to eat the seeds.
In the front yard the prickly plants try to come up through the ground and they hurt when you step barefoot upon them. I’ve said a few cuss words in my day of stepping on them. The front yard however gets mowed and so the plants are only usually hidden prickly surprises for the feet that walk upon them.
But this plant started to grow in front of the porch and we both agreed it is a stunning plant that some call a weed. He says to me every time I visit, “I don’t know if I should pull it, I think I’ll keep it and watch it grow”. Eventually it was “I was going to pull it but I just want to watch it grow”.
My dad talks about the thistle often and I know, as I watch him get older and as I watch and feel a sense of that eventual inevitable part of losing him slowly, even while still here in the flesh... that the thistle plant is becoming one of those things, those things that will bring him back to me, when I or we both need it. ❤️.
It is one of many things I will come to wholeheartedly cherish.
What a magnificent plant.

Mr. Johnson! I'm not sure you knew what an impact you had on so many people. You were my favorite teacher by far. Kind and funny don't even begin to describe you. You were just a joy to be around. I will never forget whenever you would call on me in class and I gave an answer you would always say. Are you sure???? And I would say yes I'm sure! And you would say everytime, how can you be so sure????? I still say it to this day. Rest in peace and condolences to the family. He was such a great man!

He was such a great teacher and overall man! He tolerated us unruly teenagers with such grace and humor! Seldom times did I ever see him without a smile on his face. He was one of a kind!

Q: What will you never forget about Robert?
A: He was a kind, patient and Inspiring man. When I was down and out as a teen, this man opened his home to me and treated me as one of his own. There is nothing he wouldn't do for anyone in need. He always made me laugh and always made me think of things in a different light. Bless this man and who he was in life, may he rest in peace. God speed Mr. J. Love, Angie
