I am deeply saddened to hear of Paul’s passing. The world has lost a true angel. In 2007 I lost my husband to cancer. I lived near Paul and one day he came into my dooryard not knowing me but knew I lost my husband. He introduced himself and told me if I ever needed any help to just give him a holla. Not even knowing me but knew I was raising my daughter and trying to keep up with things. This is whom he was. He talked about his beautiful daughter whom was the light of his life. I was fortunate enough to have met her and understood his love for her!! He was so proud! His smile and laughter was beyond no others! God gained a true angel! My prayers to margo And all whom loved him!

To my fellow Maine Paddlers,
It was with great sadness today that I learned of Paul “Brownie” Brown’s untimely passing.
Paul Brown was a giant among DR paddlers in the ‘80’s to 2000’s. Brownie recorded dozens of victories in WW Downriver races around Maine and Nationally.
I will always consider my friendship with Brownie a very special one. It was my privilege to have paddled with Paul many dozens of times on rivers like the Dead, Kennebec, Kenduskeag, Souadabscook and, of course, his home river, The Marsh. We paddled canoes, kayaks, and rafts in any season. Paul was an accomplished kayaker and rafter too.
He was known for mentoring other paddlers as well as for his expertise and fearlessness in running challenging WW.
Brownie kindly let my brother Paul and me use his OC1 DR mold to build two OC1 boats, starting us in our career as bona fide DR racers. He also coached us in boat building and repairs.
I watched Brownie one day in 1996 at the Lower Yough standing up in an OC1 while running some of those challenging drops like Railroad and River’s End while we practiced for the DR Nationals. Brownie won the Willis Hackett trophy multiple times (awarded to the fastest OC1 RAC Master at the WWOC Nationals). These were some of the glory days of WWOC.
Brownie was a multiple-time National Champion in ACA WWOC.
We ran the Dead River and the Kennebec (and other race courses) in DR race boats at all levels. His confidence gave me confidence.
Brownie had a great FW resume as well.
But Paul wasn’t just about paddling. He was known for his devotion to daughter Margaux. He was also well known for his many Brittany Spaniels, his love for hunting and the outdoors, and his compassion for people and animals.
One of my fond memories of Paul was a DR run on the Dead River, probably in the late 90’s. As we paddled a section of easy Class II after the Gravel pit and before Enchanted, Brownie, my brother Paul, and I watched wide eyed as a squirrel approached us swimming cross current in mid-river. Brownie extended his paddle toward the squirrel as it swam toward his boat. The squirrel scrambled up the shaft of his Zav paddle, BOUNDING ONCE on the thwart and launching itself back into the Dead River without missing a beat. The Michael Phelps of WW squirrels! We watched slack jawed and astonished. We then probably had a safety break.
Thanks for the Memories Brownie.
I will paddle the Dead River this coming Sunday (1800 cfs release, a friendly level) in my OC1 “Class IV Pro” WW boat that came from Paul’s mold.
Paul Cole & I always said that boat has an uncanny way of helping you find the right line.

To the Paul Brown Family:
My name is Becky Darres and my husband Michael and I were so saddened to hear of the passing of Paul. Im sure you all know what a wonderful person he was but am not sure if the whole family knows what he did for my son Scott and I that could have changed my life forever. About 45 years ago Scott attended a party at a friends house in Northport. He was about 6 years old at the time and somehow had fallen into the pool. When he was discovered he was at the bottom of the pool. He was removed and Paul began CPR on him immediately. He saved his life.
We are all forever grateful to Paul for his quick thinking and actions.
Sending blessings to you all
Becky and Mike Darres and Scott Desjardins

I was troubled to hear of Paul's passing. I spend a lot of time with Paul as a child. We lived about a mile from him on the Back Belmont Road. I have many fond memories swimming and fishing at the brook near the Brown home, riding horses, and maybe even getting into some innocent trouble together as kids will do. I seem to remember the first person to administer the paddle to me outside of my family was Hope Brown. Living in Virginia I had lost contact with him. I did get the chance to play golf with him, though, several years ago and can readily attest to his skill. Paul, you will be missed. I am greatly saddened by your passing and I shall raise a toast to your life and friendship tonight. Rest in peace my friend. Pete Dalton

My condolences to Paul's family. I was paired with Paul for Northport Golf's Scotch Doubles for a few seasons. We had fun playing together and even won a few times. As we talked walking from hole to hole I learned how he enjoyed paddling, hunting and Maine life. Although I never met her, I knew he had much love and pride for his daughter for he spoke so fondly of her. May he rest in peace.

Our family is very sad to hear of Paul's passing. We were neighbors of his in Vero Beach, FL for several years. It was always entertaining to talk with him about his paddling adventures, improvements to his golf game and occasionally help him pair his cell phone to his truck stereo. He was extremely excited about moving back to Maine full-time to be around family. Condolences to his family. - The Fidgeon Family

Karen and l are so very sorry to hear of the passing of Paul. Our hearts and prayers are with his family and pray that God gives them comfort in there time of grieving. He was a good friend for 50 years and was Best man at our wedding. We spent may winters fishing the Indian River Lagoon catching huge Gator trout, attended many Daytona 500's together and most recently traveling to Kissimmee Florida to see all the classic cars at Mechum Auctions. Karen and l will miss him deeply and cherish all the memories.
