Obituary of Ben D. Kann
Ben David Kann died peacefully in sleep January 15th, 2022 after valiantly negotiating a year-long lung-cancer tunnel. Ben was born November 15th, 1942 in New York, NY to Czech/Slovak parents who escaped the Nazis in 1938-39.
He attended the High School of Music and Art, and City College, where he studied painting. He was a respected and prize-winning textbook designer at top publishing houses in NY, and then a freelance book designer for many years. After moving to Maine in 2005, he worked at the Free Press in Rockland for more than a dozen years.
Ben loved music, especially Bach, jazz, opera and show tunes. He did some lovely woodworking to furnish his wife’s gallery and their home. He was an avid fly fisherman; he built wooden fly rods, two clavichords and an ultralight canoe, which sadly he never got a chance to fish from.
He is survived by his wife Betsy Levine, his sister Kathy Kann Barate and his two children, Melissa and Joshua Kann.
Memories and condolences may be shared on his tribute wall.
