Obituary of Arlene E. Smith
During the early morning hours of December 22, 2021, Arlene E. (Holmes) Smith, 79, of Stockton Springs peacefully ended her journey here on earth with her children at her bedside to be evermore with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Arlene was born at home on December 12, 1942, to Andrew and Augusta Holmes of Stockton Springs. On May 12, 1962, she married Thomas Smith of Prospect. She grew up in Stockton Springs where she lived most of her life. She was proud of the time she spent working in restaurants and shoe factories cutting shoes, most famously for Andre the Giant. She loved all animals with a special fondness for cats. She also enjoyed traveling throughout New England looking for restaurants that served home-cooked meals or buffets. On these family trips, she especially enjoyed the views of the water, fall foliage, and outside Christmas decorations. She loved to cook and try new recipes as evidenced by her huge cookbook collection. She was especially proud of her spaghetti sauce which was a family favorite and her mother’s “King Salad” which was a family tradition at every holiday meal.
She attended Calvary Apostolic Church when it was located in Winterport, where she had an active role in helping to organize their public suppers and bake sales. For many years, she coordinated the yearly Bible reading program. She also attended Crossroads to Calvary Church in Belmont and most recently Coastal Family Apostolic Church in Frankfort.
She was predeceased by her parents Andy & Gussie; her husband Tommy; her fur-babies Onyx, Sir Prancelot, Sugar, Cocoa, Sheba, and Buddy; her fur-grand babies Bruno, Prince, Pebbles, Rusty, Bailey, Button, Harley, Sunshine, S’more, KC, Belle, Tigger, Fred, Barney, Missy, Fluffy, Snowball; her cousin Betty; her favorite sister-in-law Gertrude; her special friends, Margie, Winona, BJ, Kit & Thurston; her brother, Leroy Holmes.
She was lovingly known as “Mom” to Kathleen & Scott Chambers of Winterport, Heather (Smith) Dostie of Stockton Springs, her kitty, Ebony; “Grammy” to Dug, Dory, Pumpkin, Razor, Cole, Lacie; “Sis” to Alfred Holmes of Veazie; “G.G.” to Dana and his mom, Issa Rolfe of Clinton; “Cousin” to Elaine Bissell of Stockton Springs, “Auntie” to Leslie Holmes of Portland, George Holmes of Winterport; and many other nieces and nephews. She also chose to make Bobby Walker of Stockton Springs, Natalie Walker of Searsport, and their children Allison, Audrey, and Robert part of her extended family. She will be forever in all of our hearts.
Graveside services will be held in the spring at Maple Grove Cemetery in Prospect, Maine where she will be buried next to her husband.
In lieu of flowers and in accordance with her love for animals, please consider sending donations to a no-kill shelter in her name.
