Obituary of Steven James Fyfe

Steven J. Fyfe of Searsmont, Maine, formerly of Petersburg and Hoosick Falls, NY, was reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife, daughter, siblings, and mother on Wednesday, November 24th. He was born Earl Emmons Merchant in New Vineyard, Maine the 11th of September 1930, to Clarence Merchant and Helen McCollor Merchant. As a teen, he was "adopted" by the late Albert and Fannie Fyfe of Farmington, Maine. Steven served in the Korean War, and quite by chance met his wife, Jessie when her mother and she picked him up as he hitchhiked through Petersburg on his way to Fort Drum. They exchanged addresses and upon his return were inseparable until her death in 2011. In the mid-1980's he retired from the Watervliet Arsenal and they built a home in Hoosick Falls. He was an amazing woodworker, known for the unique and colorful birdhouses he created and built with his wife and, in later years, for his beautiful hand-turned wooden bowls and jars, which he gave out freely to visitors and friends. He moved to Belfast Maine in 2008 to live with his daughters there. He is pre-deceased by his wife, Jessie Weeden Fyfe, his daughter, Corrine Fyfe (Nelson), his brother Richard Norton, and a great-grandson, Arlo Michael Church. Passed for many years now are his parents and foster parents, brother Robert Merchant, and sisters Alice Merchant and Helen Irene Merchant Dyer. He is survived by children David Fyfe of Searsport, Maine, Charlene Fyfe of Searsmont, Maine, and Irene Fyfe MacCollar of Hoosick Falls New York. He was a loving grandpa to seven grandchildren, and "Old Papa" to fifteen great-grandchildren. He will be remembered as a man with an enormous heart, a man of faith, a cool old dude, and a warm, generous and gentle Dad. Graveside service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, December 4, 2021, at Meadowlawn Cemetery in Petersburg, NY. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.ripostafh.com
