Obituary of Martha Louise Buerkle

Martha Louise Edwards Buerkle – August 20, 2021 Martha Louise Edwards Buerkle (Martie), 98 years old, lost her battle with cancer at home in Belfast, Maine on Friday, August 20th, 2021. Martie was born May 28, 1923 in Union, South Carolina to Joseph Eugene Edwards and Mattie Lake. As a child, she loved climbing trees, playing in the brook, and riding her pony, Dan, on the family property, Mulberry Plantation. Martie loved the outdoors, was fiercely independent, highly intelligent and a voracious reader. She was blessed with a sharp wit and keen tennis skills. Even when overmatched, she was proud that she could often beat even much stronger, more skilled opponents, including her older brother's friends. Martie had a great sense of humor and in one self-written obituary from years ago, included her jest that she was a “Member of the Sears Detergent Club. The family loved their “furry children” and Martie’s favorites were her twin cats Boots and Barnaby along with their dogs, Chin and Chin Shi. .” Most of all, Martie loved spending time and talking with her children and grandchildren. Along with friends and former students, we all miss her very much. Always optimistic, Martie lost her difficult battle with illness, but fought until the very end with spirit and strength, supported by the love of her family. Martie and her husband Jack were members of the Overbrook Presbyterian Church and the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. Predeceased by husband Dr. Jack V Buerkle, Martie is survived by son Stephen (daughter-in-law Sheila), daughter Melanie (son-in-law Henry), granddaughter Alexandra (Alex) (granddaughter-in-law Audrey) and grandson Britton.
