I didn’t know Dr. Whitten personally but my mom told me story after story of how Dr. Whitten encouraged her to keep breast feeding me when I was an infant. I am so thankful for this man I never knew and share in your grief regarding his passing. I am so sorry to have never met what seems to have been an awesome doctor, friend, husband and father. Rest In Peace Dr. Whitten, I hope to meet you one day and express my gratitude for being such a positive influence to my mother and me when we needed you. My condolences to the family and close friends whom are feeling such a loss right now.

Dana was a beloved friend, colleague, and doctor. He lovingly cared for our two children, visited one of them in the hospital in Portland, made a house call when the roads were almost impassible (and bragged about his four-wheel drive truck), and attended our daughter’s wedding. We relied on his morning call hours and he provided exemplary care from the time they were born until they were in college. Even though he encouraged them to see an “adult” doctor when they grew up, they always preferred to see Dr. Whitten. When they would come home for a visit, they would often stop in to say hello to him. He always seemed so delighted to see them. He was one of a kind and we will miss his smiling face and reassuring manner. Dana was a treasure and midcoast Maine will always be a special place because of him.

To the Whitten family,
I am truly saddened to learn of Dana’s passing. The last time I saw him was summer 2007 when I was consulting for Maine Maritime Academy and stopped by his practice on my way to Castine. In true fashion, Dana appeared to see his surprise visitor with his warm grin and greetings.
He, Diane, and I overlapped at Tufts Medical Center, Boston Floating Hospital in 1968 during his Fellowship there. As a rising star, he was well respected as a person and physician. The Whittens lived around the corner from me in Marblehead where Amanda and Christopher were enrolled in a little Beach School a friend and I ran during summer, teaching kids how to swim, and investigate the many wonders of the sea. Now, I treasure these small memories more than ever. May my old friend rest in peace. Ann Grynkraut Fothergill

Dear Whitten Family,
Dana Whitten's father was our family physician. He was a gifted diagnostician and he was dedicated to his patients and his Town. His wife, Earnestine, was very active in community affairs. We are sorry to read of Dana's passing, but we are happy to learn that Dana and his late wife were involved and loved and respected in the Northport area all these years. Leonard & Christine Johnson

Dear Beth and Whitten Family,
Our community, which Dana and Diane were a part of and served for so many years, are thankful beyond words. We will never forget him. We are eternally grateful our children were cared for by such a wonderful pediatrician. He was there for the birth of both my children and only 5 years ago, my Grandson. He was truly proud to see my concern fade and confidence lift, when he came to tell me before he entered the OR, "everything is going to be fine". And he was the first person to come and tell me, "everything is fine, Mom and baby are doing well". He was more than a doctor to us. He was our friend. Thank you for sharing your Dad with all of us for your lifetime. He and Diane are reunited again.

Dear Whitten family, I knew Dana as a young man. His father was our family physician in Amesbury, as well as a family friend. I spent a lot of time at their home, and knew them all well. I knew his uncle and aunt, Laurence and Tove Merrill, and it was so nice to see that Dana honored her with Beth’s middle name. The last time I saw Dana was when he spoke at his dad’s funeral. He certainly carried on the family profession proudly. My sincere sympathy to you all upon the loss of this special man. Judy Deshaies Exeter NH.

Dear Whitten Family,
What a lovely obituary, reflecting a wonderful life. Dana and I were classmates at Exeter, and though I did row there, I was neither in his league, nor terribly close to him. But having read his obituary I now too am feeling the loss... not just because he is gone, but because I have spent summers in Camden, Maine virtually all my life. We have a cottage on Lake Megunticook, and until this year, owned the North portion of Lasell's Island in Penobscot Bay. While it is obvious that he had many friends and admirers, and a very busy full life, I would like to think that with a little awareness and planning we could have enjoyed meeting at Lasells for a picnic, or any kind of casual meeting anywhere between Rockland and Belfast. If nothing else we could have shared our memories of Exeter, and our love of the MidCoast and sailing. I am sure that you all hold very wonderful memories of time with him, and will continue to be nourished by his love and example for a very long time.

I am so sorry for your loss. “Dr. Dana” as we called him was my beloved pediatrician until I went off to college. He was an incredible person and I hope the happy memories soon help flood some of the pain from your hearts. Here’s me in summer 1978 and Dr. Dana. With sympathy, Addie Chamberlain

My condolences to the Whitten family. He was one great man. It’s comforting knowing he’s with his beautiful bride.
I knew Dana professionally and personally. He was my doctor when I was little and then was my girls. I was privileged to work at the Belfast Area Answering Service for about 10 yrs - along side my dearest friend Mickie Whitney answering his practices phone lines after hours & weekends. Dana was one amazing physician- dedicated, giving his all to his patients. He was old school, made sure folks could reach him if needed.
Through the years Dana and I shared a few laughs (“that’s right Dana and you know what about!” Lol). I’ll miss that man. He had a wonderful sense of humor and the best chuckle. He adored the little ones. They kept him young at heart.
“Dana you’re gonna be greatly missed by everyone who knew you. You put so much of your heart and soul into your family, friends and the practice. You have touched so many lives. Your love and compassion will never be forgotten. I can’t say enough words to express of how much you meant to all of us. Thank you for everything my dear. Hugs and kisses to you and Diane. You’re the best”

We, and our four children, all owe a special debt of gratitude to Dana and Diane and their extended team. Their caring, their diagnostic skills, and their excellent (and speedy) referrals to other exceptional experts when needed, saved us untold grief. We will be forever thankful. Above all, Dana and Diane were joyful and caring friends —interested, curious, funny, and quick to share their pride in their family (and photos of grandchildren, including the handsome young Dana!) and adventures on the water and abroad. Dana Whitten will be sorely missed in our community, but fondly remembered by so many. Love and condolences to you all.

Yet one more in a long line of parents indebted to Dr. Whitten. Took care of my three sons with a compassion and competency unsurpassed. There was something about that guy, a spirit of caring that you just can't fake. He was so good to, and for, his patients and for their often over-worried parents. You always felt better about you child's situation after a visit and consult with Dr. Dana. Not many are made in that mold. We're so lucky we had him in our lives. Friends and family of the good doctor, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Dr. Whiten was an important part of our family life when our children were young. Our son suffered greatly from childhood asthma, so we had many visits to Dr. Whitten’s office and the emergency room. It was an anxious time. Dr.Whitten was compassionate always. At one point he reassured me, “He’s going to grow out of this.” That is exactly what happened. I will always be grateful to Dr. Whitten. I can picture his smile now, as he welcomed me and a sick boy to the healing space of his office.

There are no words that will adequately express the gratitude and love that we in Waldo County have for Dr. Whitten‘s contribution to our community. Picturing our lives without this exceptional pediatrician in our midst is a great challenge, as we not only relied upon him for his excellent medical knowledge and care, but we also sought out his compassionate reassurance during challenging times. There are not enough superlatives that I can apply to describe the great esteem in which I hold him. He was pediatrician to my four children and then provided care to my grandchildren. As a child protection caseworker, I also often brought to his office children who had been abused. Dr. Whitten was consistently reliable in his diagnosis of signs of abuse and he was willing to testify to his findings. May he rest forever in peace and love knowing that he did his job here on earth as well as any human being could ever succeed in accomplishing.
