Obituary of Carrie A. Cross
Carrie Alice Cross, 96, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2020. She was born on April 10, 1924 in Liberty to Doris (Brown) Mehuren and Harold Mehuren.
Carrie graduated high school from Walker High in Liberty in 1942 and went on to marry the love of her life, Leonard E. Cross on September 4th, 1946.
Carrie did not like to sit still and during her life she had many different jobs and hobbies to keep her busy. Most notably in 1952, Carrie starting busing children to school at the one room, Greer’s Corner School in Belmont, at the time there was not a bus so she drove a station wagon and gradually increased the size of the vehicle over time. She later went on to pick up students for all of the tri town areas and even driving to Belfast to meet the buses and drop off the kids from the outlying towns. She continued to drive the school buses and serve on the school board without any incidents or accidents for the next 20 years, retiring in 1972. She also ran the winnowing machine for her own blueberry crew. Over the years, she would make many cakes for different occasions such as birthdays and graduations to the most elaborate wedding cakes and dried flower arrangements, even making her last cake for her granddaughters wedding.
Carrie loved the outdoors and could often be found tending to her many gardens, digging dandelion greens, hanging clean sheets on the line or watching the traffic go by. Her favorite things to do were to camp in the summer and snowmobile in the winter and went on many trips with the Tri town Snowriders over the years, where you would find her driving the truck and trailers. She often picked a grandchild or two to take on these trips with her. She really enjoyed listening to country music.
She cherished her time with her family and grandchildren, and hosted many meals for her boys, grand kids and anyone else that might stop by throughout the years, she loved to have everyone around the table for Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. She often cooked meals and vats of beans for public suppers or for anyone in need. If you stopped by, there was always a fresh pot of coffee and a pitcher of iced tea ready for some good conversation.
Carrie was the first one to help someone in need and she always knew how to get the job done. She had a quick wit, a smile and a wave for everyone she encountered.
