Obituary of Phyllis Mae Johnson
Phyllis Mae Johnson passed away peacefully Monday, October 21,2019 at the Knox Center in Rockland, formally the Knox Hospital where she was born on May 9, 1925. She was 94.
Phyllis attended school, married James Johnson Sr. and had her first child in Rockland, before she and her family moved to Plainville, Connecticut. Her mother Eva and father Chester (Pa) , sister Dorothy and brother Joe were living there. In 1958, she, her husband and three children returned to Maine to Matinicus Island, and in 1968 moved back to her home town Rockland.
While living on the Island Phyllis was a home maker, volunteered at community activities and became a member of the Ladies Aid. After the family made their final move to Rockland, she joined the work force and retired in 2003 after many years at the Samoset Resort.
She loved spending time with family, and she and her sister Dorothy spent many years traveling back and forth between Maine and Connecticut ,with the kids, to spend time together. She was often heard to say "if you don't care where you sleep, the coffee's on!". Phyllis and Dot, her sister and best friend; had the joy of traveling to the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and often to visit family in Florida . She loved to read, play cards and build challenging puzzles with her friends at Rocky Coast Apartments where she resided for many years after she retired.
Phyllis is predeceased by her son Gary Johnson, her sister Dorothy Rubenstein, her brothers Joe Shaw, Judd Staples and Paul Staples.
She is survived by daughter Bonnie Johnson, son James Johnson, Jr and wife Vickie Johnson and daughter in law Bethany Johnson, grandchildren Jimmy Johnson and his wife Amethyst, Danny Johnson, Justin and Matthew Kinney, and Jazzmin Johnson. Also survived by great grandchildren, Amanda, Madison, Kayla, Zachary, McKenna, Rielyn and Adelina Pearl. Also many nieces and nephews in Florida, South Carolina, California and Connecticut.
A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held at People’s Methodist Church Hall, 13 Chapel Street, South Thomaston, Saturday, Nov. 9 from 1 to 4 p.m.
