Obituary of Mary Hollingdale Proulx

MARY HOLLINGDALE PROULX passed away September 12, 2009 in Belfast after a courageous 17 year battle with cancer. She was born June 4, 1926 in Calais, the daughter of Frederick and Charlotte (Lello) Hollingdale. She graduated from Cony High School in Augusta in 1944 and the University of Maine at Orono in 1948. She began her teaching career at Lawrence High School in Fairfield. She met Aime Proulx, the love of her life, and they were married on November 22, 1951. She chose to stay home to raise her children, then resumed her career in Belfast teaching at both the Robertson school and Crosby Jr. High School. She loved her students and enjoyed going to work every day. She served on the Maine Humanities Council, a trustee of the Belfast Free Library and the Parish Council. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and The Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Mary was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Aime, her son Frederick, and her grandson, Zachary. She is survived by her three children, Sarah Tanner and husband Bruce of St. Charles, Missouri; her son, Robert Proulx and wife Janet of Baileyville and daughter, Martha Proulx of Waterville; the lights of her life, her three grandsons, Mike, Chris and Dan Proulx. She is also survived by her two sisters, Frances Wadleigh of Augusta, Sarah Jarossi and husband Arthur of Thomaston; one sister-in-law, Valerie Marcoux of Waterville; special family friends, Judy and Forrest Warren of Belfast; many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held to honor her life at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 19, 2009 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 81 Court Street, Belfast. In lieu of flowers, Mary requested that donations be sent in her memory to Waldo County Home Health and Hospice, PO Box 407, Belfast, ME 04915.
