Obituary of William Copeland

Thomaston / Sedgwick -- William “Bill” H. D. Copeland, 88, died October 14, 2009 at a Penobscot health care facility with family present. He was born June 26, 1921 in So. Thomaston, the son of William N. and Ida May (Clark) Copeland. William served in the U. S. Army in the European theatre during WW II. His infantry division received a Distinguished Unit Badge. He married Louise Robbins Feb. 11, 1942. Bill worked in the Rockland area before going to work for the FMC Corp. from which he retired in 19 after over 30 years service. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, caring for his home, and helping his children and friends when they needed an extra hand. He especially enjoyed family barbeques, scenic rides, and puttering in his shop. He had a strong faith in his Lord and will be remembered for his quiet and insightful demeanor. He is survived by three daughters, Nancy L. Harris of Cushing, Noella L. Varnum of Sedgwick, Shirley R. Hocking of Bucksport; two sons, William Robie Copeland of Portland, Rodney D. Copeland of Warren; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Fannie, Aggie, and Mildred Copeland all of Rockland, Helen Wing of Owls Head; nieces, nephews, friends, and church family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Louise in 1999; one son, Ronald D. Copeland in 2002; one sister, Christine McCartney in 1987; and one brother, Fred Eugene Copeland in 1990. Friends are invited to meet with the family Friday, October 16th from 6-8 p.m. at Thomaston Baptist Church, Main Street, Thomaston where funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 17th , 2009 with Rev. Horace Varnum officiating. Interment will follow at the Village Cemetery in Thomaston. Arrangements under the care of Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast.
