Obituary of Kathleen Jane Long

Please share a memory of Kathleen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Kay (Kathleen Jane Buck) Long, (88) of Milo, died peacefully at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor on March 28, 2010 surrounded by family. She was the wife of Vernon (Flash) Long for 55 years. Kay was born on April 1, 1921, in Medford Center, Maine to parents Hollis and Lucy Libby Buck. She is survived by a sister Athalie & husband Wilfred Burke of Milo, son Myron Long and partner Linda Belisle of Lakeview Plantation, daughter Lorraine and husband Harvey Smith of Eliot, daughter Sheila and husband Earl Leavitt of Wiscasset and Florida, and son Richard Long and wife Paula of Hollis, NH. Also surviving Kay are six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. Kay was predeceased by her parents, brothers Glenn Buck and Neil Buck, and sister Fern Argraves. Kay and Flash lived in the Milo area their entire marriage, spending summers at Boyd Lake when their children were small and later at Schoodic Lake with children and grandchildren. The entire family has many wonderful memories of spending time at these camps. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, and doting grandmother. She was a life-long learner that always inspired her children’s education and had a great love of poetry. She was educated in the Medford Center one-room schoolhouse through 8th grade and graduated with the Milo High School class of 1938. She was active in many roles in the town of Milo and most notably, Town Clerk in Milo for 17 years. Before Flash died in 1997, they were enthusiastic square dancers for thirty years, which took them throughout the eastern US and Canada. Kay loved to travel, visiting 48 of the 50 states, Brazil, and several countries in Europe. She always had a packed suitcase ready to go and was an avid game and card player who “never remembered losing.” Following her wishes, Kay will be cremated and there will be no visiting hours. A Celebration of her Life is being planned, for family and friends, in late May. Friends wishing to honor her memory may send a donation to the American Heart Association (www.americanheart.org). The family would like to thank the staffs at Ross Manor, Sylvia Ross Home and Eastern Maine Medical Center for their compassionate treatment and for making her final days comfortable.
