Obituary of Hope Merriam Boles

Hope Merriam Boles, died April 18th 2010 at Harbor Hill nursing home. She was born on September 24th 1913, in Morrill, the daughter of Herman and Abbie Merriam. She was educated at the Morrill Village school, Crosby High School and received her high school degree from Wellesley High School in Massachusetts. She chose to work in the field of merchandising. During her career, she was a buyer for Sage Allen store in Hartford Connecticut. Later as she moved to Massachusetts, she was manager for R.H. Stearns store at the Burlington Mall in Massachusetts. She was married to Phillip Treadwell of Wellesley in 1933. Mr. Treadwell died in 1955. Then she married William F. Boles in 1956 who passed on in 1972. After she retired in 1979, she returned to Belfast to be close to her sisters. Many summers they spent pleasurable weeks at their cottage on Penobscot Bay in Temple Heights. Many memories linger on of the cook outs and family gatherings on the veranda and barbeques on the rocks on the shore. Her family was very important to her as she was a very kind and devoted member of her family. Hope was a devout member of the First Church of Belfast. She was a willing worker in the church women’s league where she served as the membership chairman of the women’s league and with grace accepted duties on the Diaconate Committee. Over the years, Hope derived enjoyment and pride to trace her genealogy as a descendant of the Mayflower Pilgrims’. In 1982 she was thrilled to join a tour to visit the home churches of her four Pilgrims’ in Henlow and Fenstanton, England several groups of which she was a member resulted in much interest to her, the colonial Dames XVIIC her descent qualified her as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Penobscot Expedition Chapter. During several years she served as a Chaplin. Her home town of Morrill was always important to her; she was especially proud to be able to claim descent from the earliest settlers of the villagers. She was sixth generation of the first family that cleared the wilderness and established the little settlement Greene Plantation, now Morrill 1855. Many years along with other members of the Morrill Historical Society, she worked tirelessly to help restore the Smith House, 1855 first home of her ancestors’ and assisted in the planting of perennial gardens at the grounds in their memory. After retirement, Hope along with two sisters traveled extensively for several years. Many episodes were recalled as people, places and things were reviewed of visits across Canada via Canada-Pacific Rail also tours to Scotland, England, Ireland, Hawaii as well as many states within the United States. Hope was pre-deceased by her two husbands, three brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her sister Josephine Grady of Belfast. She is also survived by her daughter Linda Treadwell Stanton and her husband Eugene Stanton of Ellicott City, Maryland and Ft. Lauderdale Fl; stepson, William Boles of Leola, Pennsylvania and step daughter Barbara Imbeault of Manchester by the Sea, Massachusetts. Also surviving are her two grandsons Eugene J. Stanton, III of Ellicott City, Maryland and Phillip T. Stanton of Alabaster, Alabama and two great granddaughters Alexi and Julia Hope Stanton, along with several nieces and nephews. The family extends much appreciation to the staff at Deborah Lincoln House in Belfast and also to the wonderful staff at Harbor Hill. Also to Rod and Janet Bailey of Searsport who were devoted caregivers for many years. A Memorial will be held at the First Church in Belfast June 18th at 11.00am.
