Obituary of Maxine R Slocomb

Maxine Rita (Stanley) Slocomb, 81, of Gardiner, passed away on December 25, 2015. She was born in Lincoln, Maine on May 13th 1934, daughter of Rita and Clifton Stanley. Maxine worked for many years at the Common Wealth Shoe factory. After the passing of her husband, George, she ran their large poultry farm on her own. It was a difficult time for Maxine and she was honored with an article by the Kennebec Journal August 7th 1987 for her accomplishments with the farm. After the farm closed, Maxine worked day and night cleaning the barns and preparing for a new business storing boats and cars and personal items; times were tough but she never gave up. She ran a lunch counter for the Gardiner Elks Lodge Bingo to make ends meet. She faced every challenge with a smile while spending time with her family, grandchildren and their friends - she was Nana and Gram to all. Maxine loved cooking for all and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had a passion and caring for wildlife and her pets. She loved working in her garden. She spent nearly 9 years off and on at Augusta Rehabilitation and Nursing facility after stroke and illnesses and had many friends there. After her most recent injury, she became a resident of the Maine Veterans Home where she also made friends. She so enjoyed going to their veteran hall and dancing in her wheel chair to the wonderful events they would have. Maxine passed on Christmas Night with her daughters at her side while listening to her favorite songs and the one that meant the most to her and George: Save The Last Dance For Me. It was a beautiful day to take a trip to Heaven and Jesus invited her on his birthday to join her loved ones that passed before her. She was predeceased by her husband of 32 years, George A. Slocomb of Gardiner, who passed July 12, 1986; her siblings Phyllis, Ruth, Carlton and Harland Stanley. She is survived by her daughters Francena L. Atwater and life partner Charles Anderson of Gardiner and Susan Allen and husband Gregory Allen of Gardiner; grandchildren: Michael, Jr. and Kourtney Atwater, Megan and Jason Williams, and Gregory and Danielle Allen; great-grandchildren: Brady Atwater, Surae Allen and Rylee Williams; sister Francena McLaughlin and brother Ronald Stanley, and many loved nieces and nephews. She will be loved and missed by her family; however, we are respecting her wishes that no memorial service be held. Rest in Peace, we Love you. Donations may be made in Maxine's name to the Kennebec Valley Humane Society, 10 Pet Haven Lane, Augusta, ME 04330. Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, 182 Waldo Avenue Belfast. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.directcremationofmaine.com.
