Obituary of George Francis St. Amand

George Francis St. Amand, Jr. George passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends on April 30th. Born in Cambridge, MA in 1941, he spent his early youth lovingly raised in Pawtucket, RI surrounded by grandparents and a large family, and from age 7, in Provincetown, MA. George joined the Coast Guard, enlisting in New Bedford, MA, and told many wonderful stories of being stationed in Hawaii, Japan and New Orleans. After Discharge, he attended UMass Boston and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Education at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. While living in NH, he taught in a one-room school. “The call of the sea” brought George back to the coast. He settled in Stonington where he held various jobs, including working for the local newspaper and selectman service while assisting to make the Stonington Fish Pier become a reality. This five-year project involved grant writing and assisting local fishermen to meet their goals for open trade. George operated Green’s Landing Realty in town for nearly 20 years. He also directed a Sparky’s Canteen, an arcade for youth. He was predeceased by his father George St. Amand Sr. of Truro, MA, his dear friend Emily Muir of Stonington, and the late Tom Baughman of Deer Isle. Special longtime friends include Herb Carter of Deer Isle and The Odd Fellows of Stonington, where he was a member for thirty-five years. He held the fondest memories of times shared with his buddies of the Lodge. George is survived by his wife Maggi of 28 years and three loving children, Ani of Penobscot, ME, Max of Stonington, and Victoria of Pawtucket, RI. A service will be held privately by the Odd Fellows. Condolences may be made through Direct Cremation of Maine, Belfast. Many Thanks to Hancock County Hospice for their wonderful care and support. And to George: thank you for encouraging us all to aim for that 29 hand in cribbage.
