Obituary of Alice Pearl Dow

Alice Pearl (James) Dow, age 91, of Lady Lake, Florida, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019, at Lady Lake Specialty Care. Alice was born to the late Herbert and Eunice (Carter) James, March 21, 1928, in Somerville, Massachusetts. She was married to the late Charles Kenneth Dow, March 24, 1945, in Somerville, Massachusetts. They retired from their home in Billerica, Massachusetts, and moved to Knox, Maine, where they lived for many years until Charles' death in 2016. Alice then moved to Florida to be near her daughters and a warmer climate. Alice is survived by her daughters Sandra Turnbull of Maine, Linda Lafond of New Jersey, Diane Abbott of Florida, Bonnie Bailey of Florida, Darlene DeSilva of New Hampshire, and Laureen Hope of Maine. Her daughter, Charlotte Lewis, predeceased her. She also had 22 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren. Caught between the Great Depression and World War II, Alice left school early to gain employment and marry. She later completed her GED while raising children. After most of the children were grown and out of the home, Alice went back to work at BASF, a company pioneering in the manufacturing of video tapes. Alice worked her way up to Production Supervisor. She was proud to say that she earned a bonus for a recommendation she made on how to increase production efficiency. Alice had a lovely voice and loved to sing and dance. She always had the desire to play the piano, but raising a large family did not allow for this. However, when she retired, she took piano lessons and was in a piano recital at age 70. One of Alice's favorite activities was swimming. She and her husband enjoyed many summers camping at their lake property at St. George. Alice would be the first in the water for the season, no matter how cold, and swam almost every day. Alice loved to read, especially the scriptures, which she read faithfully every day. She was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She loved teaching the children and taught in the children's organization called Primary into her 70's. Alice's pride and joy was her family. She was involved with her children, grandchildren, and greats through letters, summer vacations, and family visits. She and her husband left their camp on Lake George to their daughters and their families which has been affectionately nick named Nana Land. Alice had a zest for life and love for people that was contagious. She always had a ready smile and a kind word for all she met. She was loved by many and will be sorely missed. Services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 20, 2019, at the Belfast Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 297 Belmont Ave., Belfast, Maine. Internment will be held after the services at Knox Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home of 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast, Maine.
