Susan was proceeded by her sister Helen Downing of Raynham, MA, her parents Ernestine and Joseph Gula of Taunton MA. and her beloved former sister-in-law and friend Susan Curra of Knox, Maine. Susan always sought to care for and help others. Which is why when she attended Taunton High School she was deeply involved in Girl Scouts in her community. This desire to care for others is what led her to graduate from the University of Massachusetts with a Masters in Social Work. She then became a teen outreach social worker in the foster care system for the state of Massachusetts for over twenty years. She worked closely with young adults aging out of the foster care system and helped them prepare for their adult lives. Susan organized yearly events that celebrated these young people and their accomplishments, working with Jordan Furniture in the Boston area to provide scholarships and gift packages. She also invested in her local community by sitting on both the Brewster and Nauset School Committees for over 10 years. When she was not taking care of her community, Susan was caring for her family and friends. She was a guiding voice and a caring shoulder for many. Susan was the family historian and matriarch. She was quick with her sharp wit but also generous, kind and strong. Susan never missed any of her grandson’s performances or anyone's birthdays. She often sent cards just to remind people she was thinking of them. She was a lover of music, Maine, gardening, flowers, but most of all it was Susan’s family and friends who meant the world to her. We will all miss her deeply and cherish the time we were blessed to share with her. A Memorial Service for Susan will be held Saturday, June 22nd, 2019 at 1:00 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Belfast in Belfast, Maine. If you plan to attend please bring a mason jar of wild flowers.
