Obituary of Vincent L. Norton
Vincent “Hubby” Norton, 82, of Belfast passed away peacefully on August 31 surrounded by family. He was born in Beals, Maine in 1936 to Riley and Beatrice (Kent) Norton.
Vincent spent his childhood in Beals, where he was known by all as Hubby. His passion for basketball led him off the island to compete in tournaments throughout Maine, eventually leading him to play on the winning team in the 1956 State Championship where he set a record for foul shots that survived for ten years. Along the way, he met a rival team's cheerleader who would later become the love of his life.
After a brief time serving in Korea with the US Army, Vincent returned to Maine and married June Allen in 1962. Together they raised their children, Alison and Tony, in Belfast. Over the years Vincent worked for a variety of local businesses, including Perry’s Nut House, Ducktrap River Fish Farm, and most recently, Rite-Aid. Vincent made friends everywhere he went, and he loved making small talk with anyone he happened to come across. He loved giving people silly nicknames, cheering on the Celtics and the Orioles, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Vincent is predeceased by his parents Riley and Beatrice (Kent) Norton and sister Mabel (Norton) Drisko.
He is survived by his wife, June (Allen) Norton; two children, Alison Timerding and husband Mark of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Tony Norton and wife Jennifer of Cambridge, Massachusetts; siblings Oscar Norton of Beals, George Norton of Belfast, Rita Norton of Eastport, and Melrose Norton of Woodstock, New Brunswick; grandchildren Kasey Timerding and Maxton Norton; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Vincent was a kind, gentle man who touched the lives of many. He will be greatly missed.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 8 at Belfast United Methodist Church, 23 Mill Lane. Visitation with Vincent’s family will be held 10:30am – 11:30am. Service will be held at 12:00 with a reception to follow.
