I was one of Charlotte’s nontraditional students and was afraid that my rusty writing skills would prevent me from succeeding in college-level classes. Charlotte never gave up on me; she read, really read, every piece and talked with me about what needed improvement. Sometimes we passed the same piece back and forth three or four times until it was the best it could be. The conversations, and, ultimately, the pieces, showed me that I could do it, that I was capable. Many papers later, I went on to earn a BS in Education and an MS in Forestry. I taught middle school reading, writing, math, and science for 26 years and recently retired. Thank you, Charlotte. Laurie Mattila, Onward Participant, 1985.
