Charlotte Herbold and family welcomed me in her home as a Host-Family while I came to attend college at the University of Maine in 1989.
Seth, Pablo and Emily were still living with her in her beautiful home located in Winterport, Maine. This lovely family was fluent in Spanish language and were the best support for myself while I lived with them and had to attend The ESL Institute at the UMAINE. I lived with them for a short while but the experience was great enough to build a great love for this amazing lady who I always talked of in the best way while referring to people I admire the most in life. Please accept my extremely late condolences to Tim, Sarah, Hannah, Hilary, Jessica, Seth, Pablo and Emely. My heart goes out to you in these difficult times. Rest in Peace Dear Charlotte!

I can honestly say that without Charlotte's guidance, I would not be where I am today. As a non-traditional student at U.M.O. she gracefully taught me the finer points of communicating my thoughts via words. She was an incredible inspiration to me. The world has lost a very unique lady.

I have lost a dear, cherished friend of over thirty years. I remember especially fondly our regular chats around the hearth when I would sleep in Charlotte's large, otherwise empty, home in Winterport three or four nights a week for a couple of years when I was living most of the time in Portland but still teaching at the University of Maine. I will think of her often, and keep her in my prayers, for the rest of my life. Michael Palmer Professor Emeritus of Political Philosophy University of Maine, Orono

To the Herbold Family, we have all lost a lovely lady. We remember her when she lived in Amherst, Maine. Life was not easy for her raising eight children without Tony but she continued to smile and was a wonderful mom. Thinking of you at this difficult time. I was one of Charlotte’s nontraditional students and was afraid that my rusty writing skills would prevent me from succeeding in college-level classes. Charlotte never gave up on me; she read, really read, every piece and talked with me about what needed improvement. Sometimes we passed the same piece back and forth three or four times until it was the best it could be. The conversations, and, ultimately, the pieces, showed me that I could do it, that I was capable. Many papers later, I went on to earn a BS in Education and an MS in Forestry. I taught middle school reading, writing, math, and science for 26 years and recently retired. Thank you, Charlotte. Laurie Mattila, Onward Participant, 1985.

I am so sorry to learn of Charlotte's death. I worked with her on the faculty of the Onward Program at the University of Maine for many years. We also shared work with the Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine. Our paths have not crossed often since our retirement from UM, but I cherish my memories of Charlotte. We enjoyed our camaraderie. Shirley "Lee" Davis

I'll always remember going out to the farm in Amherst. The whole Herbold family will always have a special place in my heart. I'm grateful that I got to spend time with Charlotte in recent years as we shared similar interests, friends, etc. She will be missed.
