Obituary of Joseph Daniel Leidenfrost

Captain Joseph Daniel Hoy Leidenfrost, age 56 of Camden, ME and formerly of Hector and Rochester NY, passed away June 15th after a courageous battle with cancer. He leaves behind his beloved daughter, Abby Louise Leidenfrost of Orono, ME and her fiancé Thayer Whitney, his mother Jacqueline Leidenfrost of Hector, NY, his father Daniel J. Hoy of Fort Bragg, CA, beloved friends Camilla Jewett of Liberty, Captain Robert Burns and many friends he made in the boating community and throughout his life. Joe was born on June 26, 1961 in Montour Falls, NY. He spent his early years in Hector on his grandparent’s farm, John and Katherine Leidenfrost, where he learned to sail on Seneca Lake. He graduated from Roth High School in Rochester NY. He then worked in many managerial positions in Rochester before moving on to Key West to embark on a maritime career. Over the years Joe was grateful to work for the schooner Appledore, Schooner Nathaniel Bowditch (Gib and Terry Philbrick) and most recently as a private captain for Cheryl Remmert. His first command as captain was on the schooner Mercantile and Grace Bailey out of the Camden Harbor. Owned by Captain Ray and Ann Williamson. He also Captained the Schooner Roseway out of Boston Harbor. He worked for Yachting Solutions, Camden and Hinckley, in Southwest Harbor, doing private charters as well as other private Captain positions in Maine and the Caribbean. Joe will be missed by all who loved him and whose lives he touched. Joseph was blessed to work on the waterfront with the Major, Sam and Susan Manning and so many others. He cherished everyday and all the beauty of Midcoast Maine and especially loved being out on Penobscot Bay.
