Pearl was one of the founding members for the Gentle/Chair Yoga class in Liberty 20 years ago. She continued to come right up until her passing. I have such great memories from the early years and all the wonderful times our families spent together. I’ll never forget spending Thanksgiving at the house in the village, probably in the mid 60’s. I had never seen so much food and such a big table! Pearl handled it all with her usual calm demeanor and welcoming smile. She had the uncanny ability to make everyone feel comfortable in her presence. She was such a special lady. I will miss our summer visits and a big, warm hug from Pearl. Liberty won’t be the same without her.

When my wife and I learned of Pearl's passing we realized future summers on the lake would be changed not only for us, but for anyone who was blessed to have known and spent precious moments with the beautiful jewel of a person known as Pearl. Pearl was the first one that we looked for as we rounded the bend on the camp road. This past summer when we first arrived at the lake, Pearl happened to be getting her mail from the mailbox. Of course we stopped and received a very warm welcome to the lake from this gracious, loving and gentle soul. We'll always cherish the sweet summer memories of 4:00 o'clock tea and gathering around the evening camp fires with Pearl and the other folks on the camp road. We both count it a blessing to have known Pearl and to be a part of the special place known as Lake St. George that she loved so dearly. We send our deepest sympathy and prayers of comfort to the Banks family for their loss, but know full well without a doubt Pearl's spirit is with her Heavenly Father. I always thought of Pearl as the Grand Lady of Lake St. George and as one of Liberty's prominent Seniors. Pearl enjoyed so many wonderful years in her year around lakeside cottage, initially with her husband, Raymond and then over the years with her children and grandchildren and other family and friends. She was the ultimate kind and gentle person. She had a vitality that kept her active and involved. Amazingly she was a regular yoga class participant up until the last few months. The Hurwitz family has a special connection to Pearl and the Banks family. Most know that the story began during WWII when Ray Banks, then a young soldier, was seriously wounded in France shortly after the invasion of Normandy. My father, a frontline surgeon, operated and Ray pulled through. Out of gratitude and kindness so typical of Raymond and Pearl. my parents were invited to visit Liberty in the late 1950's and to stay in the very cottage that became Pearl's home. A few years of summer vacations was all it took to ignite the Hurwitz family love affair with Liberty. The Liberty Inn was purchased in 1961 and we are now introducing a third generation to our happy summer home. For all of the many years since Ray died, we have had a close and loving relationsip with Pearl. Whenever we think of Liberty we feel Pearl's strong presence. We will always be grateful for her generosity and kindness and for all of the shared happy times on the lake over many many years. There will be something missing in Liberty for many of us but that void will certainly be filled with memories of a life well lived and a life shared. Thank you Pearl.
