Obituary of Gary M. Witt

GARY M. WITT, departed from this world on January 20th at the age of 91. His strength and determination allowed him to overcome many medical issues over the years. His happy youth was spent in Austin, Minnesota with his parents, Silas and Rose, and brothers Jerry, Duane and Dwight. Gary joined the Navy at the age of 17 years. He received his B.A. Degree from the University of Minnesota and M.A. Degree from Wayne State University where he remained for 35 years. Besides teaching, he was involved in the Bonstelle and Hilberry Theaters directing and creating light designs for over 200 productions. His friendships made there have lasted over time. After marrying Elaine Hooks in 1958, the family grew with the happy addition of sons, Sean, Kevin and Brendan. Living on Hickory Island, Grosse Ile, Michigan was an ideal place to raise a family and make life-long friends. When retired, Gary and Elaine moved to Northport, Maine and spent many years traveling to Europe with favorites being Italy and France. In addition to his wife, Elaine, he leaves his son, Sean and wife Jennie and grandchildren Aidan, Ian and Annika as well as son Brendan and grandsons Kevin and Owen. Also surviving are brothers Jerry and Duane and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Many thanks to the "Care at Home" team of David Malay, Margie Spencer-Smith and Regina Knight. The family will be forever grateful to the staff and volunteers of the Sussman House. Their compassionate and loving care made Gary's final days full of comfort and peace. A memorial mass will take place at St. Francis of Assisi Church on Thursday, February 1st at 10 a.m. Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home, Belfast.
