Obituary of Esther M. Howes

ESTHER (McLAIN) HOWES, 98, passed away at Tall Pines in Belfast on March 13, 2017. She was born in West Appleton, ,Maine on July 8, 1918 to Martel and Hazel (Oxton) McLain. She attended high school in Beverly, Massachusetts and later received her R.N. at Waldo County Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1938. She worked in the Operating Room at the Dover-Foxcroft hospital, and in Lewiston in the “men’s ward” as well as in Maine Medical in Portland. Esther and her husband traveled many places in the U.S., across the U.S., Southern Canada to Alaska and lived in Florida for awhile. She enjoyed crocheting and used to tat. Esther also liked gardening and horseback riding. As a child, she sometimes rode her horse “Betty” to school. She is predeceased by both parents, her husband Charles Howes and a son, Ronald Howes in 2013. Esther is survived by her daughter, Irene Wilson; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Wilson, Thomas Wilson, Nathan Howes, Charles Howes, Jason Howes and Joshua Howes as well as nine great-grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to call at Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast on Saturday, March 18th at 10 a.m. with funeral services beginning at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Jeffrey Bateman officiating. Graveside burial will be held in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in Searsmont.
