Obituary of Wendell H Glidden

Wendell (Ike ) H. Glidden, Waldo, died January 16, 2017 at a local nursing home. Wendell was born in Mars Hill, Maine December 17, 1926, to Alden S. and Martha Rourke Glidden. After attending Freedom Academy, Freedom, Maine, Wendell worked for BIW, Bath before enlisting in the Army. He served during WWII and was discharged in 1946. He then trained race horses with his father in Windsor. After his father passed in 1948 he became involved in the poultry industry first as a truck driver then eventually building and operating his own poultry farm in Waldo. In early 70s he purchased several standard bred race horses and began building his own racing stock. He continued his racing stable until the mid 90s. Wendell is remembered well by many on the Maine racing circuit. He was a past member of United States Trotting Assn; Maine Harness Horsemen's Assn, Downeast Harness Horseman Assn, Marsh River Masonic Lodge, Brooks, Maine. Wendell was predeceased by both parents, brothers Basil, Averill, Ansel and sisters Shirley and Lelah; sons Charles, Brandon and Dwight; grandson Brandon II. He is survived by wife Winnifred Smith Glidden of Belfast and daughter Brenda Billings of Nobleton, Florida; brothers Merlin (Bud) and wife Joan of Delray Beach, FL and Ernest (Sonny) and wife Lynn of High Springs, Fl.; granddaughters Tracy Gaspar of Glen Allen, VA; Shannon and John Cloutier of Old Orchard Beach, Maine; Stacey Glidden, Calif.; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life and committal service with military honors with be held in the Spring.
