Obituary of Jane W. Snyder

“The world has lost a feisty, salty and stubborn Snyder woman.” Kathryn Marcella Jane W. (Bowen) Snyder died December 10, 2016 at the Woodlands in Rockland, Maine. Jane was born at home in Belfast, Maine on February 20, 1928, to Walter L., and Erlena B. (Philbrick) Bowen. She attended Belfast schools, graduating from Crosby High School in 1945. After graduation, she traveled, living in Holyoke, Massachusetts; Reno, Nevada; and Burbank, California. In 1958 she returned to Belfast and married Robert K. (Bob) Snyder, who was stationed at Dow A.F.B at the time. Together they had two daughters and lived in Hawaii and Ohio before returning to Maine in 1970. Before the transfer to Hawaii, the family embarked on an auto trip across the southern and western United States, visiting relatives and many sites across the country. On the return trip they chose to travel through Canada before the transfer to Dayton,Ohio. Their daughters have many memories and stories from these trips. Upon Bob’s retirement from the Air Force, they purchased their home in Stockton Springs. Jane loved the woods and wildlife there, feeding the birds and cultivating gardens. She and Bob grew much of their food. She enjoyed food preservation and family celebrations. Her hobbies included ceramics, rug hooking and braiding, and the Waldo County Extension. Later in life she and Bob were active with the United Bikers of Maine, participating in toy rides and fund raising. They also took an extended trip on The Cabot Trail. Jane loved those times. Jane was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Robert; her sister, Rebecca M. Dakin and her husband, Erling C; and son-in-law, Donald “Skip” Rogers, III. Survivors include daughters, Tammy M. Snyder (Erik Eriksen), of Ripton, Vermont and Sandra L. Rogers of Northport, Maine; Nephew, Wayne Dakin of Hermon, Maine; grandchildren Kim A. Ongaro, Kathryn M. Courant and Rachael L. Courant, Dylan A. Merrifox and Mason S. Merriam and seven great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. The family is grateful for the kind compassionate care given by the Woodlands and Beacon Hospice to Jane and her daughters preceding her passing, most especially Laura, Beth, Jennifer, Penny and Rachael of the Woodlands and Heidi, Claudine,Gail and Desiree from Beacon Hospice. They made Jane’s passing as gentle and peaceful as possible. There will be no viewing. Arrangements are private and will be held at the convenience of the family.
