Obituary of Clark Vaughn Cail

PALERMO— Clark Vaughn Cail, 83, of Palermo passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at Maine General in Augusta, after a lengthy battle with COPD.

Clark is survived by 4 children, Keith Cail and his wife Jeanie, and Kristin Cail and her partner Dinis, with his former wife, Kathy Dowd of Connecticut. Also, Whitney Cail and her husband Christian, and Marianna Cail and her husband Chris, with his late former wife, Therese McGannon. Clark is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Courtney, Cassidy, Brennan, Brody, Victoria, Maddox, Emerson, Cullen and Cailey. He is also survived by his brother, Gary Cail, also of Palermo, Maine.

Clark was born in New Haven, Connecticut on December 1st, 1942. He was the son of late Harry “Vaughn” Cail and Rachel Turner Cail, of Palermo, Maine.

Clark graduated from New Haven College with a bachelor's degree in business and a minor in engineering. Clark then enlisted in the National Guard, where he completed a 12-week course in radio type communications, in only 6 weeks. After discharging from the National Guard, he then returned in the Army Reserve, where he was promoted to Sergeant and oversaw all radio communications (Morse Code). All while working for Olin Corporation in Manhattan, NY.

Clarks biggest passion in life was working with firearms. Mainly handling antique firearms, becoming a nationwide gun dealer. Which allowed him to travel to all parts of the world and meeting some wonderful people. He traveled to the Great Wall of China, Sierra Leone- Africa, Amsterdam, and so many other locations. Living all over the country.

After moving back to Maine in the early 2000s, he knew he needed to settle down and decided to retire from firearm sales. While continuing to earn a living, he worked as a car

sales associate, at O’Connor GMC in Augusta. Becoming a top sales associate for most of his career.

Clark retired all together and was able to spend the last decade of his life, living out his days with his daughter Marianna, who was also his caregiver, her husband Chris, and his 2 youngest grandchildren, Cullen Vaughn and Cailey. Living in the home he built in Palermo. Passing on his knowledge of life to his grandson, Cullen. Whether it was listening to classic rock for hours, teaching him about the solar system. Or taking him for drives around Palermo. They were inseparable. Football season would also be cherished memory for Clark and his daughter, Kristin. They would spend countless hours on the phone, chatting about Brady and The Patriots and whether they were going to make it to the Super Bowl. Or sharing thoughts on which was the best show to watch currently. Which would almost always be Yellowstone.

Clark loved sharing his stories and experiences with everyone and was considered “The Most Interesting Man in the World” by close friends and family. He is missed dearly and we are all a little lost without him.

A memorial will be held in his honor on July 25th at 2pm, at his home on Hostile Valley in Palermo, Maine. Everyone is welcome to come celebrate the life of Clark Vaughn Cail and share their stories and memories of this wonderful man.
