Obituary of Mavis C. Dowland
Mavis C. Burnham Dowland, “MA”, 78, of the Victorian Villa, Canton, Maine, died on Wednesday September 28th with her loving family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Newry, Maine on May 1, 1933 to the late Lincoln and Hazel (Bucknam) Burnham.
Mavis graduated from Stephens High School. She loved to read and shared that love by working as a literacy volunteer helping others to learn how to read. Her favorite times were spent enjoying the company of family and friends, having cook- outs, playing cards, playing bingo, and games like Scrabble and cribbage. She was predeceased by both of her parents, 7 sisters, 5 brothers, and one son, Steven Dowland. Survivors include her children Barbara and Dale Stevens of Bethel Maine, Edward Dowland of Augusta Maine, Burton Dowland of Brockton Mass, Sharon Dowland of Lewiston Maine, Diana Dowland and companion Raymond Giger of Bar Harbor Maine, Brent and Maki Dowland of Japan, Peter and Tracy Dowland of Peru Maine, Clancey and Amelia Dowland of Brockton Mass, Rodney and Laura Dowland of Vassalboro Maine, and close family friend Donna Kenney of Standish ME, and 15 grandchildren.
Donations may be made in Mavis’s memory to the Victorian Villa 26 Pleasant Street, Canton Maine 04221. The family would like to thank the Victorian Villa and Beacon Hospice for their help in making for our angel’s peaceful passing. Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, online condolences may be offered at www.directcremationofmaine.com
There will be a celebration of Mavis’s life at the Canton Town Hall on Saturday October 1st from 1-3.
