Obituary of Ruth W. Otto
Ruth W. Otto died on December 5th at the age of 102 at home surrounded by her loving family. Ruth was born on January 22, 1909, in Reading, Pennsylvania. She was the only child of her parents, Ada and Ammon B. Weisner. Ruth grew up in Reading, graduated from Reading High School in 1926 and went on to major in library science at Syracuse University (class of 1930). After graduation she worked as a librarian at Lock Haven State Teachers College until her marriage to Henry (Hank) M. Otto in 1935. Hank died in 1985… one month short of their 50th wedding anniversary. The majority of their married life was spent in Pennsylvania and she always regarded herself as a true Pennsylvanian. Because of her deteriorating hearing, in 1992 Ruth moved from Pottsville, Pennsylvania, to New York City to be close to her only child and her family. However, in 2004 the family decided to seek a quieter life style and chose to move to Belfast, Maine, where they have since resided. Although she was limited, she thoroughly enjoyed the many friends she made during her time in Belfast. Ruth is survived by her only child, Carolyn Otto, her son-in-law, Harold Vine, her granddaughter, Amy Pullen, her partner, Sara Pullen, and her great granddaughter, Chatham Otto Pullen of Atlanta, Ga. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to your favorite charity. We wish to thank our many friends for their support during this time and in particular the staff of Kno Wal Lin Hospice Program, who made her final days as comfortable as possible and enabled her to remain at home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 14th at 2 o’clock at the Riposta Funderal Home in Belfast.
