Obituary of John P. Potter
John P. Potter Jr, 87, died March 20, 2012 at a Bangor Hospital. He was born May 13, 1924 in Conway, NH the son of John P. and Lottie (Irish) Potter Sr. He graduated from the Conway, NH School System where he participated in many activities and sports programs. He received several awards during his high school years. He was employed by Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard and then served in the United States Army during WW II. John was a dairy and crop farmer, and DHIA Milk Tester until his career change in 1976 to the Modern Woodman of America in Sales, Annuities and Estate Planning. John was a very active and committed member in many area organizations, The Farm Bureau, Dirigo Lodge, Scottish Right, The Shrine, Past Commander of the American Legion, The Americanism Officer of the Legion where he presented awards to many area boys and girls. An Active member and past President of the Belfast Rotary Club, served on the Waldo County Hospital Board of Directors, Scout Master of Boy Scouts of America Troop #222. An active fund raiser responsible for raising thousands for the Boy Scouts of America. During his tenure as Scout Master 31 boys attained the coveted rank of Eagle Scout. Numerous awards of Modern Woodman of America, recognized his outstanding community service Belfast Rotary Club – Paul Harris Fellowship-2000. John donated land to the town of Palermo Athletic Association and raised over $30,000 to complete the parking lot with over $175,000 of coordinating volunteered labor and donations. He participated in numerous pancake breakfasts, sponsored 5k road races, worked with the Belfast Area YMCA and the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce and numerous other organizations. He married Janet Fitch in 1953 and have two children; John P. III and Harry Dean Potter and his wife Delia and has six grand children. His grand children include; Jeremy, Julie, Tracey, Jamin and Wife Erica, Matthew and Kenneth. Great Grand Children, Kaitlyn, Parker, Branwyn, Miles, his sister Mary Shorey and brother David Potter and Fifteen nieces and nephews. A celebration of Johns’ life will be held Saturday,March 24th at 11:00 AM at the Palermo Christian Church with Pastor Ed Hatch officiating. Donation memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Malcolm Glidden American Legion P. #163, P.O. Box 183, Palermo, ME 04454 or to Richard L.
